Neoclassical architecture was born because of the rediscovery of Greek and Roman architectural heritage, and the political changes: the French Revolution (1789) and America (1776) created the republic, and took art that associated with Greek art (democracy) and Roman (republic). In the 18th century people (especially who love antiques and architects) are interested in traveling and excavating old sites, especially Greece:
- The Englishman: James Stuart and Nicholas Revett who spent three years in Greece, making accurate drawings of the old heritage building Greece (presented in the Doric order Phartenon detail - 1762)
- Germans: Johann Winckelmann who rediscovered the city of Pompeii.

The roof line is generally flat and horizontal, there is rarely a tower with a façade which tend to be long and flat due to the effects of the lined up columns. Classic proportions on the exterior is very important where the doors and windows do not reduce the perfection of neoclassical architectural values though placed behind the front columns. Doors and windows do not become sculptural elements.
In France and Italy, the tradition of formal gardens, based on geometric patterns is maintained, whereas in the UK the park are more flexible or more mimics nature (natural make smaller scale).
There are two styles of famous buildings in neoclassical architecture of this period, the style of Georgia (United Kingdom) and the Federal Style (Republic of the United States).
Georgian style developed in the UK, 1715 - 1820 and was influenced by the architectural style of Palladia. This style has seen the arrangement of the city / region. While the Federal style developed in the United States (1780-1820). With a typical interior features an oval-shaped, free-standing circular staircase, portico framed by columns, a small wooden profiles, and the proportion of the 'slim' (Slender).
